Mojarras clean production at CCAV Eje Cafetero

UNAD at the Eje Cafetero experiments with methodologies and clean techniques for fish farming with excellent results and this has lead fish farmers to introduce the production of mojarra fish as an alternative for the exploitation and increasing of profitability in their territory.

The eje cafetero's biotechnological and agricultural research center, CIAB, has developed and inproved the traditional techniques of mojarra fish farming by taking into account the correct use of water and the waste materials this kind of farming produces.

Traditionally in the production of fish, water from the ponds was poured back into the river and this water was contaminated by the great amount of organic burden caused by the decomposing of fish food and feces. Now, taking into account that these animals have a weak digestive process, their feces contain lots of nutrients which combined with an organic mineralized material that remains in the mixture of water and mud from the ponds. This water may represent a polluting threat to the river, but it can be used in other types of farming.

The technique consists on taking the residual water from the ponds and process it through a locked system where it is initially taken to a water tank previously loaded with some specific bacteria whose being in charge of a water with mud mineralization; that water and its organic materials are treated and go to an organized pipe lines with pyramidal forms that water some plants that take food from nourishing elements, some vegetables mainly. This system is closed and that implies that water will be re-utilized in other mojarras process when cycle finishes where water would be loaded of oxygen on this growing area.

Another product of this system is the knowledge that has been obtaining with this type of researches, giving to community some applied and scientific information to the development in Colombian farms that are interested in improving their clean and economic production.
